Greetings From Shanice!!!

Hello, everyone!

My name is Shanice and I’m excited to join AALEAD as a Maryland Middle School Program Coordinator. The past week was really inspiring – I got to know the awesome staff in AALEAD and learn about their interesting stories. Having lunch at Franklin Square in Washington, D.C., coffee chats outside the office, and team building games were my favorite memories so far. I have a feeling that working with them will be one of the most rewarding experiences from AALEAD. Thank you for the warmest welcome!

A little background of mine…

I was born and raised in a tiny city called Hong Kong. After I completed high school, my dad wanted to reunite with his siblings so my family and I immigrated to the United States. This decision completely changed my life. Although there were times I struggled with language and culture, I still found opportunities to chase my dream.

During my college years, I studied psychology. I was interested in the counseling and human development field. In my junior year, I went on a mission trip to Africa to help out in an orphanage.This experience gave me perspective on what poverty looked like and I learned about different needs. After coming back from the trip, I decided to add a minor in international development and conflict management. I also found interest in program planning and grant management. These experiences and knowledge prepared me to work in the non-profit organization setting, just like AALEAD.

The past summer, I had the privilege to work with the AALEAD elementary school summer program. I was very impressed by how AALEAD helps youth develop leadership skills and build confidence. I look forward to taking on my new role as the MD Middle School Program coordinator. I can’t wait to meet with the AALEADers and build friendships with them!

Outside of work, you will find me as an outdoor lover. I love hanging out with my family and friends, swimming, kayaking, eating, and exploring the U.S. I also like to try new things, and be adventurous with Groupon deals!
