AALEAD Mentoring On the National Stage

As National Mentoring Month 2019 comes to a close, mentoring professionals from all across the country convene for the annual National Mentoring Summit in AALEAD’s backyard, Washington, DC January 31 to February 1. This coming Friday, our Mentoring Staff will be presenting our workshop, titled “What’s Culture Got to Do With It? – Effective Practices to Working with Asian American Youth and Families.” We are excited to be bringing practitioner experiences in Asian American communities to the spotlight as the mentoring field becomes more diverse and moves towards the culturally relevant practice of critical mentoring.

Ready to CCMP

AALEAD’s approach to out-of-school time programming relies on the strengths brought by the youth who take part in our after school, summer, or mentoring programs. Asian American youth often join our programming to fill a void left by mainstream support networks, particularly to find a community and programming that is inclusive of their identity. The positive youth development approach of our programs guided the evolution of the College and Career Mentoring Program (CCMP) this past summer where youth voice played a significant role in developing programming focused on college and career readiness.

Youth Mentoring Program Spotlight

Since its inauguration in 2002, the National Mentoring Month campaign is held and observed every January to raise awareness and promote youth mentoring in United States. This week, we are highlighting AALEAD Youth Mentoring Program that gives youth in the ages 10-18 the opportunity to be matched in a one-on-one mentorship with a caring adult from the community.

College and Career Mentoring Program: A Mentee’s Perspective

In recognition of National Mentoring Month 2019, this week, we are highlighting the College and Career Mentoring Program (CCMP) which supports older youth in planning for and navigating post-secondary transitions in life after high school. The CCMP aims to empower and enable youth to reach their full potential through the support of a mentor in order to ease their transition to college, employment, and self-actualization. This blog features a perspective from our current CCMP mentee, Hawra, about her mentor and the impact of their relationship on her life.
